Abstract. SummaryObjectiveDelayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI of cartilage (dGEMRIC) reflects cartilage glycosaminoglycan (GAG) distribution. The technique assumes that the plasma levels of the contrast agent Gd-DTPA2− are the same across individuals after intravenous (IV) injection, when dosing by weight.

This study evaluates dGEMRIC in patients with preradiographic degenerative cartilage changes. Delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage or dGEMRIC measures the fixed-charge density and relative proteoglycan content of articular cartilage using the spin-lattice relaxation time or T1 relaxation time. Delayed gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of cartilage (dGEMRIC) facilitates non-invasive evaluation of the glycosaminoglycan content in articular cartilage. The primary aim of this study was to show that the dGEMRIC technique is able to monitor cartilage repair following regenerative cartilage treatment.
